LightSource vs. Cirtuo
Cirtuo, now Coupa Category Strategy, is guided software for writing, aligning, and tracking procurement category strategies. LightSource is the Direct Materials Operating System: the system of record for parts, BOMs, RFQs, and awards, spec through scale, PLM through ERP. They answer different questions, and many manufacturers could run both.

Where each system actually works
Keep PLM for product definition and ERP for transactions. LightSource connects the direct-material decisions between them, from spec through scale.

What Cirtuo does well: a consulting methodology turned into software
Cirtuo was founded in 2008 and spent seventeen years as the best-known name in digital category management before Coupa acquired it in May 2025. Its flagship, Guided Strategy Creation, turns the consulting-style category strategy process into an interview-style workflow: internal analysis, stakeholder mapping, business-requirements prioritization, spend and market analysis, the Kraljic Matrix, Porter's Five Forces, cost drivers, SWOT, and risk analysis, ending in an aligned strategy with initiatives attached. This is work consultancies have traditionally billed six figures to do once, for one category. Cirtuo productized it so a mid-level category manager can complete it repeatedly, with an AI recommendation engine (shipped 2023) suggesting strategies and value levers along the way. Cirtuo claims up to 8 percent fresh savings and up to 50 percent faster strategy cycles; treat those as vendor figures, but the underlying discipline is real.
The customer roster backs it up: Walmart, Boeing, Siemens Energy, Novartis, Molson Coors, BT Sourced, and Johnson & Johnson are all on the record, and Coupa cites more than 5,000 category managers across 40-plus countries. Walmart's Michael DeWitt, VP of Indirect Spend Management, said: "Cirtuo greatly enhances the category strategies that we're developing... It's easy to use. It's a no-brainer." Initiative Management and Value Tracking closes the loop from strategy to measured savings; BT Sourced ties it to pay-for-performance compensation. If your problem is that strategy quality varies across hundreds of categories, this is the product category Cirtuo pioneered.
Where LightSource is the system of record: parts, RFQs, awards, and price history
LightSource is the Direct Materials Operating System: the system of record for the work a category strategy calls for, spec through scale, PLM through ERP. The unit of work is the part. AI ingestion turns Excel files, PDFs, and drawings into a revision-managed item master; nested BOMs carry snapshots, diffs, and cost roll-ups; RFQs go out at the part level with drawings attached, from three-bids-and-a-buy to multi-round strategic events. In our evaluations LightSource is the only sourcing solution with true flexible cost breakdowns, category-specific bid sheets per event, and its AI normalizes any quote format for comparison. Award scenarios, split awards, and approvals turn decisions into tracked contracts, and per-part, per-supplier price history accumulates over time, which is the evidence that a category strategy actually delivered.
None of this overlaps with Cirtuo. Cirtuo has no RFQ engine, no item master, no quote analysis, and no supplier login; LightSource does not author category strategy documents. Around execution, LightSource adds a supplier network with 20,000 suppliers live, a free supplier workspace with onboarding in under 30 minutes, and implementation measured in days rather than quarters, with sourcing running in about 30 days. Manufacturers including BRP, Canada Goose, HelloFresh, Shure, Serta Simmons Bedding, Yum! Brands, Infinite Machine, and Arxada run direct-materials sourcing on it, and Gartner named LightSource a Cool Vendor in 2025.
Cirtuo is now Coupa Category Strategy, which changes what you are evaluating
Since January 21, 2026, Cirtuo is Coupa Category Strategy. Coupa acquired the company on May 13, 2025, its first acquisition since Thoma Bravo took Coupa private, and cirtuo.com now redirects to coupa.com. Coupa's stated plan is a full loop inside its own suite: spend analysis identifies opportunities, Category Strategy sets direction, and Coupa Sourcing executes, with Coupa AI layered across. Coupa CEO Leagh Turner described the deal as acquiring "a thin slice of technology and some really good skills." That description matches the product materials: Cirtuo is a focused strategy layer that depends on other systems for execution.
For buyers, this changes the evaluation. There is no standalone Cirtuo to buy anymore; pricing, roadmap, and integrations all run through Coupa's enterprise motion, which is straightforwardly good if you are a Coupa customer and a bigger commitment if you are not. It is also worth being precise about the direct-materials question. Manufacturers like Boeing and Molson Coors use Cirtuo on direct categories, and Coupa markets margin impact in direct spend. That work happens at the category level, with resins or castings as a strategy object; there is no part, BOM, drawing, or revision concept anywhere in the product, and in our assessment the execution layer Coupa connects it to is a generalist sourcing suite rather than a part-level system. LightSource, for its part, remains independent, with venture backing co-led by Lightspeed and Bain Capital Ventures ($33M), and a roadmap that is direct materials only.
Running both: strategy direction above, part-level execution below
Cirtuo and LightSource sit at different altitudes of the same problem, and the handoff between them is clean because neither does the other's job. A category manager sets direction in Cirtuo: consolidate the casting supply base, dual-source electronics, shift a region, set the risk posture. The output is a strategy with initiatives attached. A direct-materials team then does that work in LightSource: load the parts and BOMs, run part-level RFQs with drawings, normalize every supplier's cost breakdown, model split-award scenarios, and keep the per-part price history that shows whether the strategy delivered. Savings tracked in LightSource can feed the strategy's value reporting through its GraphQL API or plain exports.
Since Cirtuo is now a Coupa product, running both increasingly means running Coupa alongside LightSource. That is already a familiar pattern among manufacturers: Coupa owns indirect spend and procure-to-pay, and LightSource is the system of record for direct materials underneath, from the item master through awarded pricing that exports to the ERP. If your organization is framing this as a choice between the two, the more useful questions are whether you need a formal category-strategy process at all, and which system will hold the part-level record when the strategy meets a supplier.
What public reviewers say
On G2, LightSource holds 4.9 out of 5 across roughly 11 reviews, and Cirtuo Guided Strategy Creation holds 5.0 out of 5 from a single review. Both are small samples; LightSource's base is an order of magnitude larger but still modest, and one review is too thin to support any claim about Cirtuo peer sentiment in either direction.
That one Cirtuo review is positive and specific: written by a strategy consultant, it calls Cirtuo the best digital solution for category strategy and praises the guided four-step flow from analysis through strategy, initiatives, and results. G2 itself flags the listing as having too few reviews to provide buying insight, and we found no Capterra listing as of September 2026. There are no published negative reviews to quote, which says less about the product than about how few of its enterprise users write public reviews. We paraphrase rather than quote here because no archived snapshot of the Cirtuo G2 page exists to verify exact wording against.
LightSource's reviews carry enough detail to be useful. A vice president of supply chain wrote: "Having the cost and quoting information in a single location helps with rapid product launches and better visibility for our leadership group." G2 reviewer (Mid-Market, 2024). Another reviewer described the one real hurdle: "The biggest challenge of LightSource is just getting the suppliers to try it. Once they try it --- they're also hooked." G2 reviewer (Mid-Market, 2024).
When to choose what
Choose Cirtuo if
You manage hundreds of categories and need a standardized, auditable strategy process across a large, distributed category-management team
Strategy quality is inconsistent and you want a guided methodology (Kraljic, cost drivers, stakeholder alignment) that any category manager can complete without consultants
You are on Coupa, or heading there, and want category strategy connected to Coupa Sourcing inside one vendor stack
Your spend is broad and category-shaped, with a large indirect share, rather than part-shaped
Your CPO needs strategy-to-initiative value tracking with proof of impact for executive reporting
Choose LightSource if
The work is executing direct-materials sourcing: part-level RFQs with drawings, flexible cost breakdowns, AI quote normalization, and award scenarios
You need a revision-managed item and BOM record between PLM and ERP, a system of record at the part level rather than a strategy document
Speed matters: live in days on flat files, sourcing in about 30 days, with implementation included and no suite rollout
A 20,000-supplier network, free supplier access, and capability-based discovery matter to getting RFQs answered
You are a manufacturer with a lean team, from growth stage to enterprise, rather than a global category-management organization
RUNNING BOTH
Set category direction in Cirtuo and execute it in LightSource. The strategy that says consolidate castings or dual-source electronics becomes part-level RFQs, normalized cost breakdowns, award scenarios, and per-part price history in LightSource, and the tracked savings feed back into the strategy's value reporting. There is no functional overlap to manage. Since Cirtuo is now Coupa Category Strategy, the practical shape of both is usually Coupa handling indirect spend and category strategy while LightSource is the system of record for direct materials underneath, exporting awarded pricing to your ERP.
Frequently asked questions
Is Cirtuo a competitor to LightSource?
Not in any practical sense. Cirtuo, now Coupa Category Strategy, is guided software for writing and tracking category strategies; it runs no RFQs and holds no part or BOM data. LightSource is the Direct Materials Operating System where sourcing execution happens: part-level RFQs, quote analysis, awards, and price history. A team could use both without overlap.
What happened to Cirtuo? Is it still an independent company?
No. Coupa acquired Cirtuo on May 13, 2025, and rebranded it Coupa Category Strategy effective January 21, 2026. cirtuo.com now redirects to coupa.com, and Coupa is rolling out integrations with Coupa Sourcing and Coupa AI. The product continues under the new name inside Coupa's suite.
Does Cirtuo run RFQs or sourcing events?
No. Cirtuo produces category strategies and tracks initiatives; sourcing execution happens in another system, historically the customer's own tools and now, per Coupa's roadmap, Coupa Sourcing. For part-level RFQs with drawings, cost breakdowns, and award scenarios, teams use a direct-materials execution system such as LightSource.
Does Cirtuo manage parts, BOMs, or supplier quotes?
No. Cirtuo's working object is the category, not the part. There is no item master, no BOM or revision concept, no quote analysis, and suppliers do not log in. LightSource maintains a revision-managed item and BOM record and normalizes supplier quotes at the part level.
Can you use LightSource and Cirtuo together?
Yes, and the pairing is natural because they sit at different altitudes. Category direction set in Cirtuo, such as consolidating a supply base or dual-sourcing a commodity, becomes sourcing events, awards, and part-level price history in LightSource. Since Cirtuo is now a Coupa product, this usually looks like Coupa handling indirect spend and category strategy while LightSource is the system of record for direct materials.
How much do Cirtuo and LightSource cost?
Cirtuo does not publish pricing; third-party trackers describe a custom-quoted enterprise subscription tiered by modules and users, sold through Coupa since the acquisition. LightSource prices as a platform fee plus seats, is always free for suppliers, and includes implementation. LightSource customers typically go live in days, with sourcing running in about 30 days.
