LightSource vs. Graphite Connect
Graphite Connect is a supplier onboarding and supplier data network: suppliers maintain one verified profile that buyers reuse for compliance, risk, and payment. LightSource is the Direct Materials Operating System, spec through scale, PLM through ERP: parts, BOMs, RFQs, quote analysis, and awards in one system.

Where each system actually works
Keep PLM for product definition and ERP for transactions. LightSource connects the direct-material decisions between them, from spec through scale.

Where Graphite Connect is genuinely strong
Graphite Connect was founded in 2018 by two former Adobe procurement leaders, and it solves the problem they lived with: getting a new supplier verified, compliant, and payable without weeks of back-and-forth email. Suppliers maintain one verified profile on the Graphite network, now more than 800,000 profiles, and every buyer on the network reuses it. The validation layer is the deepest part of the product: identity and two-factor checks, domain and telecom verification, bank account ownership and tax validation, sanctions screening, and secure document scans. Graphite reports that customers moved roughly $250 billion in payments against Graphite-validated records in 2025, flagging 5,467 potential vendor-fraud attempts with zero fraudulent payments, and in March 2026 it added a $250,000 payment guarantee on qualified validated accounts.
The rest of the platform serves the same supplier-record mission. Supplier information management keeps golden records current, scorecards and segmentation cover supplier relationship management, third-party risk scoring pulls in sustainability and safety ratings, an intake module routes requests to the right internal team, and vendor-master sync reaches more than 50 ERPs, with an SAP Store listing added in January 2026. Named customers include Casey's General Stores, Western Digital, Wenger Manufacturing, and Paramount, and Forrester included Graphite in its Supplier Value Management Platforms Landscape for Q1 2026. For an enterprise onboarding thousands of vendors a year across multiple ERPs, this is a focused, credible product, and LightSource does not offer an equivalent of its payables-grade validation.
Where LightSource wins for direct materials sourcing
LightSource covers sourcing-grade supplier onboarding and everything downstream of it through award; Graphite goes deeper on payables and compliance onboarding and stops before sourcing begins. On LightSource, AI ingestion turns Excel files, PDFs, and drawings into a revision-managed item master. Buyers launch part-level RFQs with drawings attached, run flexible cost breakdowns (LightSource is the only sourcing solution with true flexible cost breakdowns: category-specific bid sheets configured per event), compare quotes the AI has normalized into one structure, and move AI-drafted award scenarios through approval into tracked contracts with per-part price history. None of that exists in Graphite Connect, and Graphite does not claim otherwise: there are no items, BOMs, RFQs, quotes, or awards anywhere on its site or in its documentation.
Supplier onboarding itself serves a different goal in each product. Graphite onboards a supplier so the enterprise can pay them safely. LightSource onboards a supplier so a buyer can get quotes: suppliers join free, are quoting in under 30 minutes, and can respond through Excel round-trip quoting in their own format. The network is 20,000 suppliers live, searchable by manufacturing capability rather than by tax status.
Time-to-value also differs in kind. LightSource customers go live in days on flat files and are sourcing in about 30 days, with implementation included; manufacturers including BRP, Canada Goose, HelloFresh, Shure, Serta Simmons Bedding, Yum! Brands, Infinite Machine, and Arxada run direct-materials sourcing on it. LightSource was named a Gartner Cool Vendor in 2025 and carries venture backing co-led by Lightspeed and Bain Capital Ventures ($33M).
The structural difference: supplier records in Graphite, parts in LightSource
The overlap between these two products is a single word, onboarding, and it means something different in each. In Graphite, onboarding produces a payable vendor: identity verified, bank account confirmed, tax forms validated, sanctions cleared, and a golden record synced into the ERP. In LightSource, onboarding produces a quoting supplier: capabilities captured, certifications collected into data rooms, and the supplier answering a part-level RFQ the same day. Graphite's own intake page describes routing sourcing requests to the sourcing team; the sourcing event itself happens somewhere else.
The difference follows from the data model. Graphite's core object is the supplier record. There is no part, drawing, revision, or BOM anywhere in the system, and its manufacturing solution page sells supplier data management to manufacturers rather than anything about the parts they buy. LightSource's core objects are revision-managed items and nested BOMs, with suppliers attached to the parts they quote. Analyst and marketplace coverage sorts the two products the same way: Forrester places Graphite in its supplier value management landscape, G2 lists it under supplier relationship management, and Kearney ranked LightSource the #1 direct materials sourcing solution in 2024. In our evaluation, Graphite Connect is barely a competitor to LightSource, and that is a statement about layers of the stack rather than about quality.
Running LightSource and Graphite Connect together
A manufacturer with both problems can run both systems without conflict. LightSource handles spec through award: engineering drops in the BOM, buyers run RFQs and cost breakdowns, and an approved award scenario becomes a tracked contract with pricing history. When a new supplier wins business, Graphite's work begins: compliance onboarding, bank and tax validation, risk scoring, and creation of the vendor master in the ERP so the first purchase order and payment can flow. LightSource's GraphQL API exports awarded suppliers and pricing into the same ERP that Graphite keeps clean.
Nothing in the two products collides; they meet at the awarded supplier. An enterprise already running Graphite for vendor management does not need to remove anything to adopt LightSource for direct-materials sourcing, and a LightSource customer with heavy compliance requirements across indirect spend and services would keep a system like Graphite for that job.
What public reviewers say
LightSource holds 4.9 out of 5 on G2 across roughly 11 reviews; Graphite Connect holds 4.4 out of 5 on G2 across 31, plus 4.3 out of 5 across 26 reviews on Capterra. Both bases are small for enterprise software, an order of magnitude below the big suites, so read them as directional signal rather than statistics.
We quote reviews verbatim only when we can verify the exact text against an independent archive. No archive of Graphite Connect's G2 review pages exists as of September 2026, so we summarize its G2 themes and take verbatim quotes from an archived copy of its Capterra profile instead. On the positive side, G2 reviewers consistently praise the guided onboarding flow, the clean supplier-facing experience, responsive support, and the automated bank and tax validations that remove manual vendor-master entry. The recurring criticisms are specific: configuration changes route through Graphite's account team rather than self-service, dashboards are simple with limited filtering, the identity-verification flow can confuse smaller vendors and freelancers, and the contracts layer is thin.
The Capterra pool reads the same way, in both directions. "The platform is easy to use, and I appreciate that all vendor information is conveniently stored in one place. Vendors have the ability to update their own details, which streamlines the process. The support staff is also excellent," wrote a Capterra reviewer (PTP Supervisor, Entertainment, 2025). The critical notes are just as specific. "The dashboard is very simplistic, it's missing a better filter and customization option," wrote a Capterra reviewer (Vendor Setup Associate, Media Production, 2025). And a Capterra reviewer (Procurement Operations Manager, Entertainment, 2025) who credits Graphite with "reduced onboarding time and overall vendor satisfaction" also notes that "ID Verification sometimes is confusing to complete."
LightSource's G2 reviews are archived and quotable. G2 reviewer Jin-Won K., Vice President of Supply Chain (Mid-Market, 2024): "Having the cost and quoting information in a single location helps with rapid product launches and better visibility for our leadership group. It's got its quirks, but the constant updates are promising." G2 reviewer Sam A. (Mid-Market, 2024) put the sharpest observation in the dislikes box: "The biggest challenge of LightSource is just getting the suppliers to try it. Once they try it --- they're also hooked. I've had a bunch of suppliers ask me about how to get access for their own procurement team. It's a great sign!"

RUNNING BOTH
Run LightSource for spec through award and Graphite Connect for compliance and payment enablement. Engineering and buyers work in LightSource: BOM ingestion, part-level RFQs, cost breakdowns, award scenarios, and per-part price history. When an award creates a new supplier relationship, Graphite onboards that supplier for payment: identity, bank, tax, sanctions, and the vendor-master record in your ERP. The products meet at the awarded supplier, and nothing between them collides.
Frequently asked questions
Is Graphite Connect a sourcing tool?
No. Graphite Connect is a supplier onboarding, supplier information management, and third-party risk platform. There are no RFQs, quotes, bid sheets, awards, or price histories anywhere in the product or its documentation, and its intake module routes requests to your sourcing team rather than running sourcing events.
What is the difference between LightSource and Graphite Connect?
The unit of work. Graphite manages supplier records: verified identities, bank and tax data, risk scores, and ERP vendor masters. LightSource is the Direct Materials Operating System, spec through scale, PLM through ERP: it manages parts, BOMs, RFQs, quote analysis, and awards, with suppliers attached to the parts they quote.
Do LightSource and Graphite Connect compete?
They barely overlap. Graphite owns payables-grade vendor onboarding and master data, while LightSource owns direct materials sourcing from spec through award. The one overlapping word, onboarding, means payment enablement in Graphite and quoting readiness in LightSource, and many manufacturers could run both.
Does Graphite Connect support BOMs, RFQs, or part-level quoting?
No. Graphite has no concept of items, parts, drawings, revisions, or BOMs, and no RFx or quoting capability. Its manufacturing offering is supplier data management for manufacturers, not part-level sourcing.
How much does Graphite Connect cost?
Graphite does not publish pricing. Capterra lists a starting price around $25,000 per year, with cost driven by modules selected and supplier volumes; the network is free for suppliers. LightSource prices as a platform fee plus seats with implementation included, and it is also free for suppliers.
Can LightSource replace Graphite Connect?
Only for sourcing-grade supplier onboarding: capability profiles, certification collection, data rooms, and getting suppliers quoting in under 30 minutes. LightSource does not do bank-account ownership validation, sanctions screening, or vendor-master sync into 50+ ERPs. If payables-grade validation and fraud prevention matter to you, run both; the products meet at the awarded supplier.
