Notes use three words deliberately: "Native" works day one, "Configured" arrives through an implementation project, and "Marketed" appears on the vendor's site with day-one delivery undocumented. "Not documented" means the vendor does not publicly document this capability as of Sep 22, 2026; it may exist, and we note the gap rather than guess. Ratings reflect public documentation as of Sep 22, 2026.

What Sievo does well: company-wide spend analytics at enterprise scale

Sievo has been doing one job well since 2003: showing large enterprises where their money went. Founded in Helsinki and bootstrapped for nearly two decades before a $44 million growth investment from Susquehanna Growth Equity in 2022, it counts Mondelēz, Mars, Levi's, Carlsberg, and Deutsche Telekom among its named customers. The company says it processes spend equivalent to more than 2% of global GDP each year, maintains over 100 million enriched supplier records, and keeps customers for more than 10 years on average. Those are the numbers of a category anchor, and we treat them that way.

The product earns the position. Sievo extracts, cleanses, and classifies spend across many ERPs, entities, currencies, and languages, which is exactly the problem that overwhelms in-house BI teams. On that base it has built savings and performance management (Initiative Management, launched in 2025 and extended by the January 2026 acquisition of Provalido), ESG and CO2 analytics, peer benchmarking through Community Data, and a conversational assistant, Sievo IQ. It also has a genuine direct-materials analytics lane: the Direct Materials Budgeting and Forecasting module combines ERP spend history with MRP volume data to produce budget scenarios and purchase-price-variance forecasts that FP&A teams at manufacturers use in planning cycles.

LightSource does none of this. Our analytics are scoped to sourcing: savings against baselines, BOM cost tracking, supplier activity. If the job is company-wide spend visibility or finance-validated savings reporting at global enterprise scale, Sievo is the specialist and LightSource is not a substitute.

Where LightSource is the system of record for direct materials

LightSource is the Direct Materials Operating System: the working environment where parts get sourced, from spec through scale, PLM through ERP. The unit of record is the part. Items carry revisions, drawings, HTS codes, should-costs, and price history. BOMs nest, snapshot, diff, and roll up cost. RFQs go out at part level with drawings attached, suppliers quote into structured formats, AI compares bids across formats and rounds, and award scenarios become tracked contracts whose pricing exports to your ERP.

Two capabilities matter most in this comparison. First, cost breakdowns: LightSource is the only sourcing solution with true flexible cost breakdowns, category-specific bid sheets configured per event, so a casting quote and a circuit-board quote each break down along the cost drivers that apply to them. Sievo benchmarks prices against indexes; LightSource shows you the line items inside a specific supplier's quote before you award. Second, the supplier side: 20,000 suppliers are live on the network, supplier access is free, and onboarding takes under 30 minutes, so quotes arrive inside the system rather than in email attachments.

The delivery model is also different. Sievo describes its own fit as enterprises with $1B+ in revenue or $500M+ in spend, and its deployments are enterprise data programs. LightSource customers go live in days on flat files and run sourcing within about 30 days, with implementation included. The customer list runs from Infinite Machine, a startup, through Shure, Serta Simmons Bedding, and Canada Goose, to BRP, HelloFresh, Yum! Brands, and Arxada. LightSource was named a Gartner Cool Vendor in 2025 and carries venture backing co-led by Lightspeed and Bain Capital Ventures ($33M).

Why they rarely compete: Sievo analyzes recorded spend, LightSource creates the record

The simplest way to see the difference is where each product sits relative to your ERP. Sievo sits downstream. It ingests what ERP, AP, and MRP systems already recorded, then classifies, enriches, and analyzes it. That position is why multi-ERP complexity is Sievo's strength, and it is also why Sievo runs no sourcing events, takes in no supplier quotes, and manages no BOMs. On Sievo's own direct-procurement pages, BOMs appear as a data source for mapping spend to COGS, and the featured customer voice is a finance partner. That is the design working as intended: an analytics layer does not need an execution layer to do its job.

LightSource sits upstream, between PLM and ERP, where the record gets created. A buyer opens a sourcing project against revision-managed items, suppliers quote into structured cost breakdowns, an award is approved, and a contract with per-part pricing now exists that the ERP did not have before. By the time that pricing lands in ERP transactions, it has entered Sievo's field of view.

Sievo itself describes its frontier as closing the gap between insight and action, and it partners with execution tools to act on its findings. For engineered direct materials, the action happens in a sourcing system of record that holds parts, drawings, quotes, and awards. That is the layer LightSource provides.

Running Sievo and LightSource together

For a large manufacturer, the two products slot together without overlap. Sievo serves the CPO and CFO as the measurement layer: company-wide spend cubes, ESG reporting, budget forecasts, and finance-validated savings tracking. LightSource runs the direct-materials execution loop underneath: RFQs, quote analysis, awards, and per-part price history, with awarded pricing exported to the ERP through the GraphQL API or flat files. Once that pricing shows up in ERP transactions, Sievo's extraction picks it up, and its Initiative Management can validate the savings those sourcing events created against baselines. In practice, Sievo measures what LightSource saves.

The pairing question does not arise for everyone. Many LightSource customers sit below Sievo's stated $1B+ enterprise fit and get their savings visibility from LightSource's sourcing-scoped tracking alone, and a Sievo customer with mostly indirect spend may not need a direct-materials execution system at all. The overlap case is specific: an enterprise manufacturer with significant engineered-parts spend that wants both finance-grade measurement and a real sourcing workbench.

What public reviewers say

On G2, LightSource holds 4.9/5 across roughly 11 reviews and Sievo holds 4.1/5 across 9 reviews. Both are review bases of roughly ten, so read them as directional signals rather than statistics, and do not read Sievo's small count as weak adoption: the company reports average customer relationships of more than 10 years, with customers at Mars and Mondelēz scale.

Sievo's reviewer base is thin enough, and its review pages sparsely archived enough, that we summarize themes rather than pull verbatim quotes. The positives are consistent and specific: an intuitive product that people learn by doing, spend consolidated across business units running different ERP systems, classification that beats raw ERP output with easy manual reclassification, and responsive customer success; one reviewer described colleagues who previously rarely brought data to a discussion now running data-driven initiatives. The criticisms are equally specific: data visibility cannot be scoped by cost center or project, which limits rollout beyond procurement; complex analyses tend to end up exported to Excel rather than finished in the tool; and more frequent data refreshes cost extra, which one reviewer argued should be automatic. Verified enterprise reviewers elsewhere credit the same core strengths: data quality and integration fit in complex procurement environments.

LightSource's reviews are specific enough to quote directly. A G2 reviewer (VP of Supply Chain, Mid-Market, 2024) on the direct-materials job: "Having the cost and quoting information in a single location helps with rapid product launches and better visibility for our leadership group." Another G2 reviewer (Mid-Market, 2024) was candid about the friction point that matters most on a network product: "The biggest challenge of LightSource is just getting the suppliers to try it. Once they try it --- they're also hooked. I've had a bunch of suppliers ask me about how to get access for their own procurement team."

When to choose what

Choose Sievo if

  • You need company-wide spend visibility across dozens of ERPs, entities, currencies, and categories, indirect spend included.

  • Finance-grade savings tracking matters: booked versus planned savings, validated against baselines through Initiative Management and the Provalido acquisition.

  • You want ESG, CO2, and diversity reporting computed on your spend data.

  • FP&A needs direct-materials budgeting and purchase-price-variance forecasting built from ERP and MRP history.

  • You are a global enterprise near Sievo's own stated fit of $1B+ in revenue or $500M+ in annual spend.

Choose LightSource if

  • The job is running direct-materials sourcing: part-level RFQs with drawings, flexible cost breakdowns, AI bid analysis, and award scenarios.

  • You need a revision-managed item and BOM record between PLM and ERP, with per-part price history tied to real quotes and awards rather than AP postings.

  • You want suppliers working in the system: free supplier access, onboarding in under 30 minutes, and 20,000 suppliers already live.

  • You need value quickly: live in days on flat files, sourcing in about 30 days, implementation included.

  • You are a manufacturer below Sievo's enterprise floor, or a lean team that needs enterprise-grade sourcing without a dedicated admin.

RUNNING BOTH

Run Sievo as the measurement layer and LightSource as the direct-materials execution layer. Sourcing happens in LightSource: RFQs, quote analysis, awards, and per-part price history, with awarded pricing exported to your ERP through the GraphQL API or flat files. Sievo then reads those ERP transactions into its spend cubes, and its Initiative Management validates the realized savings against baselines. There is no functional overlap to manage, because Sievo does not run sourcing events and LightSource does not do company-wide spend analytics.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sievo a competitor to LightSource?

Not in practice. Sievo is a spend-analytics and procurement-performance platform that analyzes what your ERP and P2P systems already recorded, while LightSource is the Direct Materials Operating System where part-level sourcing runs. They sit on opposite sides of the ERP: Sievo downstream reading transactions, LightSource upstream creating awards and pricing.

What is the difference between LightSource and Sievo?

Sievo consolidates and classifies company-wide spend across multiple ERPs and tracks savings for finance; it runs no RFQs and takes in no supplier quotes. LightSource manages revision-controlled items and BOMs, runs part-level RFQs with cost breakdowns, analyzes quotes with AI, and turns awards into tracked contracts. One measures spend, and the other executes sourcing.

Does Sievo run RFQs or sourcing events?

No. Sievo's platform is analytical: spend analytics, savings and initiative management, ESG reporting, and budgeting and forecasting. To act on its findings it points to downstream execution systems and partners. Sourcing events, supplier quoting, and awards happen in tools built for execution, which for direct materials is the job LightSource does.

Does LightSource do spend analytics like Sievo?

No. LightSource analytics are scoped to sourcing: savings against baselines, BOM cost roll-ups and history, and supplier activity. It does not ingest AP or ERP transactions for company-wide spend classification, ESG reporting, or peer benchmarking. If you need those, Sievo is the specialist.

Can you use LightSource and Sievo together?

Yes, and the fit is natural for enterprise manufacturers. LightSource runs direct-materials sourcing and exports awarded pricing to your ERP; Sievo reads those transactions into its spend analytics, and its Initiative Management validates the realized savings. Sievo measures the outcomes that LightSource creates.

Who is each product built for?

Sievo states its fit as enterprises with $1B+ in revenue or $500M+ in annual spend, and its customer list is global consumer and industrial companies like Mars and Mondelēz. LightSource serves manufacturers from growth stage to enterprise, including BRP, Canada Goose, HelloFresh, Shure, Yum! Brands, and Infinite Machine, with lean teams running it self-serve.
